Jobs are in the RGV despite high unemployment numbers

New numbers were released on the unemployment rate, and the Rio Grande Valley may have the highest percent of unemployed residents in the state of Texas.

It TMs not all bad news though; our unemployment rates have fallen two percent in the last year.

The state of Texas as a whole has about 413,000 more jobs bringing the unemployment rate down by nearly one percent in the last 12 months. McAllen ” Edinburg – Mission and Brownsville – Harlingen are the top two Metropolitan areas with highest unemployment rates in Texas at eight and eight and a half which is also above the national average, but a spokesman for Workforce Solutions said the Rio Grande Valley is actually doing better. He says there are lots of jobs available.

“For example in the McAllen MSA, we added almost 6,000 jobs from this time last year to last month. That’s huge. Brownsville ” Harlingen MSA added 3,000 jobs from this time last year till now. So jobs continue to be generated and folks continue to look for work and there are jobs available,” Victor De Leon with Workforce Solutions said.

De Leon said that our unemployment rate has dropped about two percent since last year, adding there has been lots of interest in new jobs created by the technical sector such as SpaceX, The Windfarms and Eagle Ford Shale.

De Leon said Workforce Solutions also offers training for people looking to learn additional skills to help land a new job.
