Senior Sports Spectacular – Elite Eight

Sports

Eight Athletes. Four Crazy Competitions.

TRACK AND FIELD

ATHLETES:

Daryin Jones | Pace High School

Ramsey Moreno | Edinburg Vela High School

WHAT HAPPENED:

Both competitors faced a full slate of challenges for this elite eight track and field matchup. A traditional egg race kicked things off, followed by a 20-yard sack race. Once both runners completed the sack race, a 20-yard sprint to the dizzy spins set up the home stretch, a 50-yard sprint back to the finish line.

Despite a slow start out of both the egg run and sack race, Moreno made up ground on Jones during the sprint and dizzy portions of the first leg. Ten quick spins opened the door for an easy finish and a first-round win for the Vela Sabercat. Facing a 1-0 deficit, Jones jumped out of the gates early yet again. A stumble out of the sack race couldn’t slow Jones down, as he completed his spins and raced to the finish line to force a third and final heat. In the final, Moreno’s long legs proved detrimental in the sack race, stumbling through the 20-yard section of the circuit. Jones took advantage, and cruised his way to an impressive come-from-behind finish.

BASKETBALL

ATHLETES:

Joshua Rodriguez | Weslaco High School

Lizzie Garza | Brownsville Veterans High School

WHAT HAPPENED:

The game is H-O-R-S-E with and R-G-V twist. Three Letters. Total.

Last week Garza did the unthinkable, turning a 2-0 deficit in to a 3-2 win over Los Fresnos star Ricky Altamirano. This week she was in the same situation following two quick three-point buckets from Rodriguez. After an ambitious trick shot attempt by Rodriguez, Garza got her jump shot going with a quick score. Rodriguez would not be fazed, however, matching Garza’s jump shot with a smooth stroke of his own. With his 2-0 lead in tack, Rodriguez went for the win with a nice up-and-under layup. Garza’s attempt, though close, would not fall, giving Rodriguez an elite eight sweep and a ticket to the final four.

WINNER:

Joshua Rodriguez | Weslaco High School

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

ATHLETES:

Aaron Nixon | McAllen High School

D.D. Guerrero | Hanna High School

WHAT HAPPENED:

The Matchup of perfection. In the opening round, both Nixon and Guerrero defeated their opponents with perfect 9 for 9 scores. This week would be no different.

The name of the game? Spin and make contact. Consider Nixon and Guerrero experts. After three rounds of play, each athlete totaled perfect scores. Because an increase in spins could not faze these superstars, the next round challenged athletes to make contact from the opposite side of the plate. Batting switch, each athlete continued their impressive runs, totaling yet another three rounds of perfection. After six rounds of perfect performances, one final long-ball competition would settle the score. In the end, Nixon’s long ball proved too much for Guerrero to overcome, cementing the bulldog’s place in the final four.

WINNER:

Aaron Nixon | McAllen High School

SOCCER

ATHLETES:

Ava Alaniz | McAllen High School

Albert Maradiaga | Brownsville Veterans High School

WHAT HAPPENED:

Both competitors faced a penalty shootout…. With a twist. Facing a traditional best-of-five format, both athletes would attempt to score and defend each shot. When playing goalkeeper, each athlete’s orientations will remain in tack, but, before any shot attempt, the kick taker must spin around five times to shake things up.

The first kick attempt proved difficult for both Maradiaga and Alaniz. Following a scoreless first round, Alaniz stepped up with a perfectly placed ball to notch the first score of the game. Maradiaga, however, would match with a score of his own, slipping the ball just under the outstretched foot of Alaniz.

With just three kick attempts left, Alaniz needed to stay sharp, but a shot off the crossbar halted any momentum she hoped to build. Maradiaga’s well-placed shot into the corner would give him his first lead of the competition. Alaniz responded well with a comeback score, but Maradiaga’s composure was on full display. Needing both a score and a save to force an extra round of kicks, the bulldog fell victim to the spins, sending her kick just over the goal. The senior charger punched his ticket to the final four with a 4-2 victory.

WINNER:

Albert Maradiaga | Brownsville Veterans High School
