(CBS 4 Sports) – Iris Iglesias and the sport of softball are synonymous with each other in Mission. The first ever coach of the Lady Eagles program when the program was born in 1995, was given one of the great honors an individual can receive. On Tuesday night Mission CISD’s board of trustees made it official by naming Mission High School’s softball stadium after the legendary coach.
As the matriarch of softball in Mission, Iglesias guides the Eagles to five district titles and nine bi-district wins and a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2000. After retiring in 2014 Iglesias has spent a lot of time with the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame after being inducted herself back in 2012.
Several former players and community members arrived to Mission’s Central Office to see Iglesias officially receive the honor.
The district will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony once the names is put on the stadium facade and on the scoreboard. The ceremony is expected to take place in August.
