As one of the top pole vaulters and hurdlers in the state, McAllen High’s Josiah Martinez is no stranger to success.
But, he is also no stranger to adversity.
Martinez faced trials in each season during his four years of high school. Despite losing loved ones, having seasons cut short due to injury or seeing the world shut down due to COVID-19, Martinez kept running.
Martinez earned division-one track and field scholarship to the University of the Incarnate Word thanks, in part, to determination and breathtaking talent. The former bulldog also attributes his success to his coaches, friends and family.
As he prepares for his first collegiate season, Martinez is continuing to train in preparation for what’s to come. For now, however, Martinez shines as this week’s DHR Health Athlete of the Week!
