RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The biggest and richest fishing tournament on the Texas coast is just days away, and some 50,000 anglers are expected to participate in this year’s CCA Texas Star Tournament.
The 31st annual Coastal Conservation Association State of Texas Anglers Rodeo runs from Saturday May 23 thru Monday September 7th, and a million dollars in prizes and scholarships are being offered.
If you are lucky enough to catch one of the first five of sixty-tagged Redfish released along the Texas coast, then you could win a brand new truck, boat, motor and trailer. Nine of those prized reds were just released right here in the Lower Laguna Madre.
Dylan Sassman, Assistant Tournament Director, “We are scattering fish from the land cut to South Padre, so wherever you fish there is one close by probably.”
Practically every year there is at least one angler who catches a tagged red but failed to enter the tournament and thus lets nearly $100,000 worth of prizes slip thru their hands.
“Well, you got to be registered first. You got to go to STAR Tournament.org and get registered, but if you are and catch that fish you win a brand new Ford F-150, and a Haynie Bigfoot, Mercury motor and Coastline trailer package.” said Sassman.
In addition to having a chance at catching a redfish worth a boat, motor and trailer package valued at more than $90,000, there are also $325,000 in scholarships just waiting to be won by young anglers who catch the heaviest flounder, gafttop, trout or other species.
Sassman added, “So, this year with everything going on we have extended the early bird deadline to May 22. So, as long as you enter before midnight on May 22, you are automatically entered to win a 210 Dargel, Evinrude motor and McClain trailer package just for signing up.”
