SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – On Thursday, a change.org petition was opened calling for South Padre Island City officials to cancel Spring Break events in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The petition currently has 7,300 signatures of a 7,500 goal.
On Friday, South Padre Island sent a press release announcing that they had no plans to cancel any venues, urging the venues themselves to cancel should they feel the need to.
In response to this press release, some venues have chosen to cancel such, as Megan Thee Stallion, and others, such as Clayton’s Bar and Grill have instead stated that they would not cancel any events and instead urged the city to cancel.
This Sunday, South Padre Island has responded by issuing a new press release which stated that it would be suspending the issuance of any new special event permits for the next 14 days.
In that press release, the city also stated that “The City of South Padre Island should not be utilized to absolve or excuse individuals or business owners of their responsibility to themselves, patrons, and the public at large.”
With neither venues on South Padre Island canceling all events, nor the city/county stepping in and fulfilling Clayton Brashear’s request it will likely be up to consumers to either stay away or attend mass gatherings.
