What you need to know about flood insurance

News

MERCEDES, Texas — Homes across the Rio Grande Valley hit by high winds, harsh rains and major flooding on Monday night. With damage to their property some residents are heading to their local insurance agency to recover the damage. One local insurance agent tells us what you need know about insurance during this ongoing rain event.

Alejandrina S. Telles – State Farm Insurance, “A lot of people think that their home insurance includes the flood and it does not. We definitely need to get a separate policy to cover for flood insurance.”

In 2018 the “Great June Floods” caused hundreds of millions in damage for residents affected by the devastating rain event. This week the heavy rains make a comeback and homes flooded once again. Telles says that to make a flood damage claim, the water has to come from rising water. Leaks on roofs or on windows are not considered in flood insurance claims.

“Because of last year’s storm a lot of people were not in a flood zone and they still got flooded. People came in telling us they have lived in their home for 30 – 40 years and they never flooded. This time it did flood.” Says Telles.

Those looking to recover with insurance at the last minute, may be too late to open up a new policy and expecting to claim the recent rains. Telles adds, “When people want flood insurance, there is a 30-day waiting period. Even if you sign and pay for a particular day, it doesn’t come into effect until 30 days later.”

The National Weather Service recommends home insurance even if you do not live in a flood zone. Flood insurance is available to homeowners, renters, condos, and businesses. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency just five inches of water can cause over $25,000 worth of damage.
