CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Weslaco resident will serve more than 3 years in prison for his role in a smuggling attempt.

Jose Roberto Pompa, 49, will serve 41 months in federal prison for transporting 48 people concealed in a grain hauler through the United States.

Authorities stopped Pompa’s hauler at the Sarita Border Patrol checkpoint and discovered 48 undocumented immigrants inside of the vehicle.

The people originated from Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru.

Pompa is permitted to remain on bond and voluntarily surrender to a prison facility in 2021.
