SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Veteran organizations from across Texas gathering in South Padre Island for the 1st Annual Southwest District training. For the next two days, representatives from over 29 counties will undergo training to open Veteran Service Offices. This type of organization is accredited by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs and is meant represents veterans in their communities.
Salvador Castillo, Cameron County Veterans Service Office, “You represent veterans out there and they get their claims hopefully approved and that brings federal tax dollars into the community which in turn injects a little bit into the local economy.”
This is the first time this type of training is held in Cameron County. The local organization hopes to one day host a national training in south Texas.
