Valley native working aboard USS Ashland

190720-N-WI365-1193 CORAL SEA (July 20, 2019) – Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jacob Mendoza, from Santa Rosa, Texas, signals ‘Seize Fueling’ aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) during a replenishment-at-sea (RAS) with the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204). Ashland, part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, with embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is currently participating in Talisman Sabre 2019 off the coast of Northern Australia. A bilateral, biennial event, Talisman Sabre is designed to improve U.S. and Australian combat training, readiness and interoperability through realistic, relevant training necessary to maintain regional security, peace and stability. SANTA ROSA, Texas – A valley native from Santa Rosa is currently working aboard the USS Ashland.

Ashland is part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, a group of warships and marines that are ready to perform amphibious operations, Wasp being the flagship.

Currently the USS Ashland is participating in Talisman Sabre 2019, a training exercise that occurs once every two years and is designed to improve combat relations between Australia and the United States.

As a Boatswain’s Mate, Seaman Jacob Mendoza would be responsible for the training, directing, and supervising of personnel in ship’s maintenance.
