MCALLEN, Texas – An un”bee”lievable discovery for workers with the city of McAllen as a massive beehive was found in an abandoned home. A contractor cutting lawns noticed bees living in that home located in the
1300 block of Cedar Avenue. Officials say because of our agricultural region bees are important for pollination. Instead of exterminating them the city decided to rescue and relocate as many as possible.
Glen Simpson with Bay Bees out of Brownsville was called in to help.
“There were at least 15,000 to 20,000 bees in that one colony. They were attached to a board that was on top of the chimney. We removed that board and started cutting out comb.” says Simpson.
Simpson adding the beehive was years in the making. 200 pounds of honey was extracted which had to destroyed because of smoke used in the extraction.
The bees have been relocated to a farm in Lyford.
