PHARR, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley experienced over 200 traffic accidents involving pedestrians in 2018; according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The department now launching the “Be Safe, Drive Smart” campaign in an effort to save lives by alerting drivers to slow down and obey the laws.
Octavio Saenz, TxDOT Public Relations, “It is important the individuals fulfill that role of understanding what they need to do to be safe. Crossing at crosswalks and of course for drivers they need to be particularly attentive especially when there’s children. Especially where there’s an area you know there’s a lot of foot traffic.”
TxDOT officials say 23 people died last year in the Valley resulting from traffic accidents involving pedestrians.
