Two school districts cancel in person graduations

Harlingen, Texas (KVEO)–Donna and Weslaco Independent School District decided Friday to cancel its in person graduation ceremonies.

In a statement to community members, both district said that the graduation ceremonies were cancelled due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County.

Previously, Donna ISD had offered alternative dates in July and August as options, but as the numbers rise, the district reached the decision to cancel commencement.

“While it is with heavy hearts that we make this decision, we felt it was a necessary action to take to ensure the safety and security of our DISD students, staff, and community.” said the district.

Weslaco ISD has the same concern, and referred to Hidalgo County Judge’s Richard Cortez supplemental emergency order related to COVID-19.

“Only together can we regain control of our lives and the important events that we treasure. While we are saddened by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wish every graduate success in future endeavors” said Weslaco ISD.

As of June 19, there are a total of 3,096 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Rio Grande Valley. There are 72 reported deaths related to COVID-19 and 1,537 recoveries.
