McAllen, Texas (KVEO)—The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced Tuesday they will be supporting the families of both fallen McAllen officers.

Tunnel to Towers, a program that provides financial relief for the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty, will be paying off the mortgage on the home of Officer Edelmiro Garza and providing financial relief to Officer Ismael Chavez’s 18-year-old daughter.

There is no such thing as a routine day on the job for a police officer. These officers were doing what they do every day – answering a call for help to protect residents in their community, and it cost them their lives. They lost their lives protecting us – now it is our turn to step up and protect the families they left behind, said Frank Siller Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The two officers were shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call on July 11.

Officer Garza was 45 years old. He was an 8-year veteran of the force. Garza leaves behind his wife, and four children.

Officer Chavez was 39 years old and was a former Weslaco East High School science teacher and football coach before deciding to change careers. He began working with the McAllen Police Department in November, 2017.
