EDINBURG, Texas – Testimony is wrapping up in the trial of an alleged shooter accused of gunning down a three year old boy and his father in Rio Grande City. The jury heard from the last witnesses in the trial of Jesus Angel Rebollar. Rebollar stands accused of fatally shooting Hector Garcia Jr. and his three year old son Julian Garcia.
Two of Rebollar’s childhood friends took the stand testifying that Rebollar was with them getting a haircut at the time of the shooting. The jury saw surveillance video of Rebollar and his friends walking up to the barbers house at approximately 7:00 p.m. A previous witness claims the shooting happened at 6:00 p.m. Prosecutors asked Rebollar’s friends why they never submitted the video to investigators as evidence until now. The two said they tried speaking to Rio Grande City Police but were turned away twice.
The defense also called on a psychologist who placed doubt of credibility on an eyewitnesses testimony. The doctor testified when analyzing a video that shows an eyewitness pointing Rebollar as the main suspect in a line up, certain factors influenced the witnesses decision. The investigator allegedly not telling the eyewitness it was okay to not choose someone from the line, adding investigators placed Rebollar who is light skin among men tanner than him, making him stand out.
Closing statements are expected to begin tomorrow morning. Rebollar currently faces two counts of Capital Murder. If convicted he will automatically be sentenced to life in prison.
