SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Residents are left without power after strong winds hit the city of South Padre Island. About 31 utility poles collapsing this morning along Padre Boulevard. Now a massive effort to restore the city’s electricity to the destination city is underway.

It was an unexpected disaster very similar to the aftermath of a hurricane. Without much warning, strong winds are to blame for the collapse of the utility poles along Padre Boulevard. Plants and vehicles stuck between live wires. Law enforcement directing traffic while utility crews clearing out live wires and debris.

SPI authorities are asking residents to prepare to be without power for the next few days. They estimate a majority of the island will be operational by late in the evening.

Ernest Singleton, resident, “It kind of brings back memories of a good 15 years ago when we had Hurricane Dolly. Many of the poles snapped, to see this again, it’s unreal to us.

Despite the damage the city is not under a total blackout. There are sections of the city that have had their power restored. Regardless, a massive effort is underway to restore the 31 downed poles.

Emilio Villareal, resident, “Never seen nothing like this. I’ve seen some good hurricanes, big storms and never seen a domino effect of nearly 50 plus telephones poles snap like this.”

There have been no reports of injuries. However, the city of South Padre Island is warning residents to stay away from the power lines. There have been a few people approaching the lines to take pictures or selfies near the poles. These are live wires and city official ask that residents not go near them.

The city says that they plan to have 85 percent of power restored this evening. Utility poles are expected to be back to normal by Saturday.
