Street to be renamed in honor of fallen trooper

News

EDINBURG, Texas – The Hidalgo County Commissioners’ Court is honoring fallen Texas DPS Trooper Moises Sanchez by renaming a street in Edinburg. On Tuesday the commissioners’ court passed a resolution which will rename a portion of 10th street to State Trooper Moises Sanchez Boulevard.

County Commissioner Ellie Torres, “It’s a way of showing respect and honor to someone who gave so much to their community and ultimately paid with their life.”

Commissioner Ellie Torres sponsored the resolution which she says was the idea of retired DPS Trooper Lt. Johnny Hernandez as well as the city of Edinburg.  The resolution was passed unanimously. In April Trooper Sanchez was shot in line of duty after responding to a call and died from surgical complications in August. Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez calls the incident a tragedy for our community.

“Here was a man, a family man, that was just doing his job who was shot and ultimately killed. To me that’s kind of the least thing that we can do to honor his service to us.”

The portion of 10th to be renamed begins at FM 107 northward to west Monte Cristo and officials say they hope to complete the name change by the end of the month or early November.  Many came out yesterday to commissioner court to support the resolution including Trooper Sanchez’s son, Zachary.

“We did have some representation from the state troopers who came to honor Trooper Sanchez. As well as his son who spoke of the memories he had of his father.” said Commissioner Torres.

McAllen City Commissioners will also be discussing renaming a portion of 10th street at this upcoming Monday’s Commission workshop.
