State, county officials and non-profits aid in flood relief

SEBASTIAN, Texas — Some areas of the Rio Grande Valley are recovering from last week’s flooding. Several community leaders and area non-profits are continuing their relief efforts. “This is a perfect example of what can happen when we come together.” Says State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr.

He is joining community leaders and several area non-profits in Sebastian to deliver some relief.

“It hit people in different degrees and some people are still under water and will still be underwater for weeks to come. We need to be good neighbors, reach out and help those people in need.”

Willacy County Constable Albert Garza, who helped organize the event, says while the community is recovering, he is already looking to the future. “I know that everybody is kind of stressed out about the situation you know the anxiety and stuff like that but hopefully learn from this and improve in the future.”

Resident Chita Perez says while she appreciates the relief efforts she is also looking towards the future.

“We need a better drainage system, we need people to speak up for us, we need to unite as a community and not only as a community but as a whole county.”

When the storms hit Willacy County, Deputy Albert Oviedo says it was a united effort to help.

“The first night we were out here until almost like 5 or 6 in the morning. People were calling that needed to be pulled out of the water. Other fire departments were here there were other agencies from other fire departments as well.”

While Senator Lucio and his team are lending a helping hand the senator touted recent legislation approved this session called “Rapido”.

“Rapido simply means the state of Texas will use its rainy-day fund to help those affected by flooding or hurricanes or natural or man-made disaster in the future.”
