SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — The City of South Padre Island is looking to recognize the Island Metro – Multimodal facility for it’s green design and construction.

Recently the city has applied to have the new facility considered for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification (LEED). That’s a worldwide recognized honor meant to highlight energy efficiency. This comes days after Keep Texas Beautiful named SPI a Gold Star Affiliate for its environmental efforts.

Jesus Arriaga, Transit Director says, “One of the reasons that we do this is just to promote it. I think the FTA, the Federal Transit Administration, is very big on building sustainable buildings. There’s certain things that we’ve done here on this building that we want to promote and encourage other people to do as well.”

The city has not received the certification at this time. They’re expecting a response within the next 4 months.
