MCALLEN, Texas – A Hidalgo County Sheriff candidate is answering questions about legal documents that show he owes more than $53,000 in back child support payments.
Local 23’s Mike Jimenez sat down with Sheriff Candidate Frank Guerrero who was very forthcoming on the reasoning behind his delinquency on child support payments.
Legal documents show that in April of this year a judge ruled that Guerrero could have paid child support payments in a timely manner. The judge found him guilty of a separate act of Contempt ordering him to the county jail for 180 days for each count. That commitment was suspended and he was placed on community supervision for 120 months.
Documents show since that order, Guerreo has made on time payments and he is paying the support back with interest. He says it’s a personal issue involving divorce. It was also a tactic on his part to make his wife meet financial obligations of making on time payments per their divorce agreement.
“At no time have I ever failed my children. I love my children dearly, I’ve always provided for them, I’ve always met their needs.”
Guerrero says he is running to deliver a better sheriff’s office. One that is proactive and prepared. He says he brings 18 years of law enforcement experience. The private management of a multi-million dollar private jail, and a business background to the table. He feels the office has been soft on crime and disconnected from the community. He wants to bridge that gap and says he’s the person to do it.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s election will take place next year.
