RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Organizers of a benefit run which aims to bring awareness to those battling kidney diseases are asking for the communities help in an effort to make this year’s event a huge success.
This Saturday, October 5, 2019, is the 2nd annual Share Your Spare Kidney 5k Run.
“Essentially to bring awareness to those individuals with kidney disease that are battling kidney disease and how we, as a community, can come together to better support them,” says Leonel Alvarado, an event organizer.
100% of the proceeds will benefit the Driscolls Children Medical Plaza McAllen Nephrology patients.
“Kidney disease can affect children even from birth all the way to their adulthood, so this is a great event to bring awareness to kidney disease in children,” says Dr. Samir Al-Akash, Medical Director at Driscoll Children’s Kidney Center.
Driscoll Children’s Hospital never turns away a child based on financial need and Dr. Samir Al-Akash says many are unaware that there are many children on dialysis waiting for transplants. He says money raised during the run will benefit children right here in the Rio Grande Valley.
“Preparing children for transplant, you know helping their donors go through the donation process, you know, using equipment, using state of the art equipment to monitor patients while they are receiving their therapies,” Dr. Samir Al-Akash continues.
Event Organizer Leonel Alvarado says the run is inspired and in honor of his mother Maria Dolores Alvarado who he says faces her own challenges every day on dialysis.
In addition to the run, you can also register to be an organ donor. Alvarado says last year’s event was a huge success with many families coming from out of state to participate and would like the communities help in rallying behind a great cause.
“And we’re here to let these individuals know these children know that we’re here to support them and we’re here to help them with whatever it is that we can,” says Alvarado.
The run will be taking place Saturday morning, October 5, 2019, at 7:30 at the Driscoll Children’s Medical Plaza.
