Rio Grande Valley State Veterans cemetery to receive $1.5 million

MISSION, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Texas State Veterans Cemetery is set to receive a grant for expansion. The cemetery was awarded $1.5 million by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for four additional columbarium walls and a memorial wall to hold cremated remains. According to cemetery officials, the Valley has the third largest veterans population in the United States.

George Rice, cemetery representative, “Right now we’re at 70% capacity on our columbarium areas. With that grant the state is using it with the VA to come out, engineer and build a new set of columbariums to further the needs of our veterans and veteran families.”

Rice adds, with the large population of Vietnam Veterans aging out in the Rio Grande Valley, the cemetery expects to receive an influx of veterans within two years.
