RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – If you want to help protect the only population of wild Ocelots in the United States then the brand new specialty license plate featuring the rare south Texas cat is now available.

The only wild breeding population of Ocelots in the United States clings to a precarious existence right here in Deep South Texas.  Biologists estimate only some 80 of the endangered cats remain on refuge lands and a handful of area ranches.

If you would like to show your support for these rare cats purchasing the newly designed Ocelot license plate provides an opportunity to help save them.

Bob Severson, Vice President of the Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge has led efforts to create the new ocelot specialty plate featuring an image by renowned national Geographic photographer Joel Satore.

“The plate is just $30.00 extra, of that fee $22.00 goes to the Friends of Laguna Atascosa, and 100 percent of that $22.00 goes to Ocelot conservation.” says Severson.

The eye catching specialty plate would be an attractive addition to any vehicle and a great way to show support for our unique Texas ocelots.

Severson, “It is very simple to get one, all you have to do is…on the bottom of the plate it says Save Texas  Just go to that website and immediately the place where you can order the plate thru the Texas DMV comes up on your screen.”

And if your current license plate is not ready for renewal don’t let that stop you from purchasing the new Ocelot plate.

“It’s not a problem, order now, and everything will be prorated.” says Severson.

Imagine for a moment the incredible potential for Ocelot conservation, if folks in the Rio Grande Valley and throughout the state participated in the new ocelot specialty plate fundraiser.

“So please join us in this effort to keep these beautiful wildcats thriving as part of our great Texas natural heritage.”adds Severson.
