RGV lawmakers to lead in redistricting

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas — Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick names Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. to participate in the 2021 Redistricting Committee.

The way a district is shaped sets the power and representation for elected officials. Oftentimes, defining what political party gets a larger say in the state legislature and at the federal level. Senator Hinojosa says, “Redistricting is one of the most partisan issues that we take up every 10 years.”

Recently the Texas Lieutenant Governor appoints the upcoming re-districting committee. A total of 17 members. Two from the south Texas region including Hinojosa as Vice Chair and Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. serving as member.

It’s a task taken every 10 years following the next census. This year the 2020 has ongoing controversy at the federal level about including a question regarding citizenship. A decision which could affect states with large immigrant populations like the state of Texas.

“The constitutional law says that we are to count every person. Not talking about citizenship, it talks about every person. If we don’t take an accurate count our projection population growth in Texas will be inaccurate.” Says Senator Hinojosa.

Hinojosa also says that he’s looking forward to representing the needs of the growing populations and will work to ensure that voices of all Texans will be heard. Hinojosa adds that a growing population for the region indicate that the Valley could be getting three more representatives.
