LOS FRESNOS, Texas – One restaurant near San Antonio made a nearly five hours journey to the Rio Grande Valley to deliver care packages to the Los Fresnos Police Department.
Molly Mckinney, co-owner of Locals Cafe in Lake Hills Texas, said when the pandemic hit, she immediately knew she had access to things people needed.
“So, we had people coming through our drive thru window, and saying ‘can I just have a cup of flour? Can I just have two eggs? Do you have any sugar I could use?’” said Mckinney
Mckinney shut down her restaurant and has converted into a supply chain distribution for items like hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and food. Mckinney said she and her partner realized some of the most vulnerable communities in need of help are right here along the border.
So, they loaded up their truck with supplies and headed to Los Fresnos where they made today’s donation.
Police Chief Hector Gonzalez said the care packages are a morale booster for his team as they endure a stressful time during the pandemic.
“I give thanks to this organization for bringing these care packages for our guys, and some supplies we will probably pass onto the citizens of the community,” said Chief Gonzalez
Mckinney also wants to put more food in people hands so she is looking to partner up with bigger corporations to increase her supply chain.
Mckinney said she will come back to the valley and is looking for the next community to help.
