Public comment deadline on border wall construction extended

STARR COUNTY, Texas – The deadline for public comments regarding a proposed border wall project in Starr County has been extended. The original deadline was Monday, August 26, but Customs and Border Protection say they first need to consult with the county’s municipalities for specific requirements. Nearly 700 comments have already been submitted on a proposed border wall project in Starr County aiming to close gaps.

Jose Reyes Muñoz lives in Reynosa but frequents the valley often. He supports the construction of this project saying it will give shoppers and residents a peace of mind, allowing them to shop peacefully without having to see so much law enforcement activity surrounding their community.

Jose Luis Gomez also supports the project saying migrants should respect American laws and says he hopes President Trump builds a wall that reaches the sky to avoid what he calls invasions.
The proposed project would consist of 30 foot tall posts, detection and surveillance technology, automated vehicle and pedestrian gates, and all weather roads for patrol units to run parallel to the Rio Grande. If approved, construction would happen along Roma, Escobares, La Grullla, and Rio Grande City.

Customs and Border Protection releasing a statement to Local 23: “Due to the FY 19 appropriations language, CBP must consult with Starr County municipalities for border wall alignment as well as specific area requirements.  For this reason, the open comment period has been extended to allow Starr County residents the opportunity to express their concerns pertaining to border wall.”

100 additional comments have been submitted since the original deadline. While some support the project others say “we do not need the wall for the safety of our country. Adding it will interfere with wildlife and the natural water and flooding patterns.”

CBP says the exact location of this project will depend on environmental concerns and operational requirements. To submit your comment visit and search for USCBP-2019-0018. The new deadline is set for September 25.
