New rapid test kits to be put to use

News

STARR COUNTY, Texas – Starr County officials have received the first batch of rapid tests for COVID-19 which can provide results in as little as 15 minutes.

The new testing kits do not require nose swabs. Instead they require a blood sample from a small finger prick.

Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said administrators are working to determine the accuracy of the tests by using them on those who have already tested positive for the virus, to make sure the results match.

“We are trying to establish a baseline for accuracy, so what we did, we tested some people that we know are positive and some people that we know are negative due to the swab test that we have already done so we can get accuracy on the test before we actually start doing it to everyone,” said Judge Vera.

Vera said they are expecting another 200 kits to be delivered by the end of the week.
