Nearly Half a Million Dollars Found in Diaper Box and Detergent

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Cameron County Sheriff’s Department is in the early phase of a money laundering investigation but already have two suspects in custody.

Tuesday at around 3pm., Dolores Raquel Toquero Perez and Karen Aline Toxqui Chacon, were pulled over for a traffic violation near Carmen Avenue outside of Brownsville city limits.

Sheriff Omar Lucio told Local 23 News at a press conference, officers couldn’t see the Jalisco Mexico license plates. When asked to search the trunk, a diaper box and laundry detergent seemed suspicious because there was no baby car seat in the back of the driver’s red Kia Forte.

The diaper box had $495,000 in cash, wrapped in duct tape and hidden in the diaper box.

Sheriff Lucio told media the women did not know how the money ended up with the trunk and were driving from Houston to Mexico.

Perez and Chacon are charged with money laundering with bonds set at $150,000 each.

What is going to happen to the money? Local 23’s Derick Garcia explains the possibilities.
