Man pleads guilty to smuggling half a million dollars

MCALLEN, Texas — A resident of Mexico pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle $570, 247.

According to a release, Jorge Alberto Ruiz Periban, 35, attempted to conceal the money within a spare tire.

Ruiz-Periban entered the inspection lanes at the Anzalduas Port of Entry, where he was referred to secondary inspection. Authorities then noticed an abnormality in the spare tire and discovered the unreported currency.

The release adds Ruiz-Periban admitted he intended to avoid reporting the money and take the money from Mission to Mexico.

Authorities say the money will be forfeited to the United States.

Ruiz-Periban sentencing is scheduled for June 16. He is facing up to five years in prison.

The release adds he will remain in custody until his sentencing.

Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Redavid is prosecuting the case, said the release.
