EDINBURG, Texas – For the last 10 years the Edinburg CISD has operated Project Gateway. It is a program aimed at recruiting students who have not reported back for the new school year.

Today parental involvement assistants went door to door through northern Hidalgo County colonias. They showed parents and students the assistance available to overcome obstacles that are keeping the student away from school. The district says they can provide students with the resources they need to be successful in school.

Sandra Rodriguez, Parental Involvement Coordinator – Edinburg CISD, “Education is so important. We want all our kids to graduate and get their diploma. Our staff goes out and looks for these children who have not come back. For different reasons they are home taking care of siblings. They’re the provider for the home, they have to work. We have young ladies that have a baby.”

Since the program began in January 2010, Project Gateway has assisted more than 1,000 students return and earn a high school diploma.
