The Women’s Business Center of Cameron County has officially opened at the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce on University Boulevard. It is only one of five ‘Women’s Business Center’s in the state.
According to Executive Director Andrea Figueroa Benton, the center will focus on educating and helping businesses grow though one on one counseling at no cost and making sure to help women overcome the challenges of starting a business.
Benton said, “We’re going to have different sessions on topics like human resources, customer service, financing for businesses and there are all taught by community leaders who are experts in their field so it’s really great for women, we have a lot of women that graduated in the past and were successful in growing or starting a business.”
The Brownsville Chamber of Commerce will receive a $150,000 annual grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to operate the Women’s Business Center. The chamber will provide up to $75,000 in matching funds.
