The woman involved in a crash that left an 8-year-old dead in Rio Grande City (RGC) has been charged.
Elia De La Cruz, 35, and Maria Leah Gonzalez, 8, were involved in a crash on Feb. 8.
According to a release, officers responded to a major accident on W. Highway 83 in Rio Grande City.
At the scene police informed a vehicle rear-ended a garbage truck and that two individuals were pinned inside the vehicle.
The release states both victims were removed through the center of the windshield and taken to a local hospital. The 8-year-old was later pronounced dead.
Officials later identified those involved and identified them as mother and daughter in the press release.
An investigation revealed De La Cruz was traveling at a high speed. The release states officers at the scene detected a strong alcohol smell coming from the vehicle. An inspection later revealed two cans of beer inside.
De La Cruz is being charged with intoxication manslaughter. Her bond was set at $50,000.
The Rio Grande City Independent School District released the following statement on Gonzalez’s passing on,
The RGCCISD family is saddened to learn of the death of one of our students, Leah Marie Gonzalez a 3rd grade student at General Sanchez Elementary. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family. Many children have and will be affected by this news. We encourage you to be especially sensitive and prepare to offer support to our students during this time. RGCCISD will have additional counselors available for those wishing to speak to someone. Over the next few days, we encourage our RGCCISD family to be diligent in observing the actions of our students to ensure that those who may need additional support will receive it.
