Woman Charged With Furnishing Alcohol To Minors And Deadly Contact

Local News

Across the Rio Grande Valley, students are crossing their tassels from one side to the other.

College and high school graduations are a time for celebrations and parties but they could also be a time for trouble… and the Brownsville police department has a stern warning for adults who would give alcohol to minors.

The warning comes from an incident on May 13 in Brownsville, in which a 38 year old woman was arrested for allegedly furnishing alcohol to minors.

Claudia Gonzalez was the adult in control of the residence and was charged with furnishing alcohol to minors and deadly conduct for not checking on the welfare of a juvenile who was unconscious.

Jose Trevino with the Brownsville Police Department said graduations and holidays could be a time when minors get their hands on alcohol.

“We just want to remind the parents that if you’re going to hold parties at your home to make sure that you keep an eye on your juveniles,” Trevino told News Center 23.

“Underage drinking is not allowed, and the residents of the home are going to be ultimately responsible,” he said.

The punishment for making alcoholic beverages available to a minor is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $4,000 or jail for up to a year or both.

Additionally, the violator will have his or her driver´s license suspended for 180 days.

The day of the incident, officers made contact with a 15 year old male resident had apparently been drinking. Another male juvenile was found passed out on a chair, and appeared to have thrown up on himself.  Officers were unable to wake him up and he was taken to the hospital.

Three other juveniles were also intoxicated at the residence. Police want the incident to serve as a reminder to parents to keep kids safe and sober.
