The winter outdoor wildlife expo is officially underway in South Padre Island.
The expo aims to teach visitors about nature, fishing, birds and local wildlife unique to South Texas.
This is the 3rd consecutive year that the event is at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.
Organizers expect over 1,300 visitors during the week-long event.
Volunteer/Event Organizer Carolyn Cardile says, “South Texas is a phenomenal place for birding. If you are interested in birding at all this is the place to be. There is a huge number of species here. More than in most parts of the united states. We have a lot of experts that know a lot about those birds.”
Visitors from all over the world come to the Rio Grande Valley for bird watching on an annual basis.
Last year, the site was sanctuary for a bird so rare, the sighting had to be confirmed by the Texas Bird Records Committee.
