Willacy County officials discuss first COVID-19 death

Local News

WILLACY COUNTY, Texas – On Saturday, Willacy County officials confirmed the Rio Grande Valley’s first death related to COVID-19.

County officials described the patient as a man in his 60s, but offered no other details about the case.

Details about the case, such as the patient’s exact age, city, or whether the case was travel-related, are not being released at this time by Willacy County because they do not have a public health department to disclose that information.

“I want the family to know that we know and understand how hard it must have been for y’all to go through what you have endured in the past days and weeks,” said Willacy County Judge Aurelio Guerra.

Officials urged all residents to stay home during the press conference.

Judge Guerra demanded that those who are sick to stay home as well, and if a patient is sick, only one family member should act as a caregiver.
