Wife of man killed by Edinburg police responds to new developments

Local News

The Texas Rangers shed light on what happened the day 39-year-old Jose Graciano Lopez was shot and killed by Edinburg police, but his wife still feels left in the dark.

The Texas Rangers revealed four out of the five Edinburg officers fired back at Lopez who first fired his rifle, according to the Texas Rangers.

Angelica Lopez has been asking questions since her husband who suffered from mental illness was shot and killed on July 7 during a standoff with police.

Angelica Lopez claims the Texas Rangers told her they would inform her of any new details as they became available.

On Thursday Angelica Lopez learned that Jose Lopez reportedly fired the first shot, but it was the media, not an investigator, that informed her.

“I said, ‘How could they do this? How could they do this to me? They promised they would call me and let me know and answer my questions.’ I’ve been waiting for that call,” Angelica Lopez said.

Angelica Lopez said she still doesn’t understand why her husband wasn’t treated with more care.

There was a chance Jose Graciano Lopez could have been overly medicated at the time of the incident, according to Angelica Lopez.

Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy and toxicology report.
