It is one of the longest high school football rivalries in Valley history.
The Battle of the Arroyo between the Harlingen Cardinals and the San Benito Greyhounds will face off again tonight.
For such a big game, the field must be ready for the players to thrive on the field.
The man behind preparing the Boggus Stadium is Omar Benavides.
Before every big game he makes sure the turf is perfect, the stadium is clean and the players and band members are ready to go.
Benavides has been taking care of the stadium and field for almost two decades.
Starting in 2000 he helped fix the grass field which has now transitioned into turf. Benavides tells CBS 4 the best part about his job is seeing the players grow up.
“There is a lot of players that played here, now they are coaches and I see them and you know I saw them when they were little and now they are coaching it feels awesome.”
Benavides is now a trade supervisor in charge of overseeing all the athletic fields for Harlingen C.I.S.D.
The field that landed him the job twenty years ago was Boggus field.
“On Friday nights I’m on the sidelines and if a kids gets hurt I’m there to help out anything that needs to be done I’m out here on the field.”
When asked if this was his second home, Benavides responded, “Yes.”
Benavides has been sought after by professional teams even getting an offer by the Arizona Diamondbacks to be their grounds keeper. However, he denied the offer and stayed home in Harlingen after having family complications.
Benavides says he loves what he does and plans to be here for another ten years.
