Weslaco Parents Die in Michigan Car Crash, One Child Dead Two in Stable Condition

Local News

A Weslaco mother and father are dead while two of their three children are in stable condition. The driver rammed into an elementary school. The crash happened Sunday night in Lansing, Michigan.

Police identified the driver as 43-year-old Jose Angel Aguilera, and the mother as 36-year-old Gardenia Herrera of Weslaco. Herrera died at the scene while her husband died from his injuries the next day.

Herrera’s three children were also inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.

According to Robert Merritt, Public Information Officer for the Lansing Police, there was “Massive trauma to all of them, as well as you had massive trauma to the male who was still alive at the time. A situation like this is tough. Especially when you’re dealing with children, especially some of us that do have children. It’s a tough situation.”

The 5-year-old boy and the 10-year-old have been upgraded to stable condition, while the 11-year-old died Monday afternoon.

Lansing Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing.
