Wellness programs being implemented in the Rio Grande Valley

Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley is continuing their efforts to implement wellness programs in the community.

The Challenge RGV is a 12 week program where people from around the Valley sign up to better their health. Many are putting their new year’s fitness resolutions to the test. Whether it’s about losing weight or eating healthier, the Challenge RGV is designed to help people meet their goals.

The Brownsville Public Health director tells us why these programs are important.

Dr. Arturo Rodriguez, “Eleven years ago when we were looking at our numbers of diabetes and blood pressure and other diseases, they were all related to being overweight and obese. We realized that a one-time event wasn’t enough.”

The challenge is continuing until April. In the end three people will win $1,000 if they have lost five percent of their body weight from their initial weigh in.
