Edinburg, KVEO (Texas)— During the press conference, the identity of the deceased male was revealed as Yadiel Miguel Morales.
It was also revealed that the suspects black Charger was seen at the scene of the crime and when police attempted to conduct a traffic stop the suspects fled. After the vehicle sustained a minor accident it was revealed that the driver, Stephen Santos, had gunshot wounds to his leg and he was taken to the hospital.
The motive for the shooting, as described during the conference, was a drug exchange gone bad. It was revealed that Yadiel Morales drove down from South Carolina for the exchange. A struggle ensued over weapons at the hotel. Yadiel was stabbed, Jeffrey Vargas was shot, and Stephen Santos was shot.
Officer Benedict also revealed that Yadiel Morales and Jeffrey Vargas were together at the crime scene and that investigators believe the two were friends.
The Edinburg Police Department holds a press conference regarding a deadly stabbing, shooting that took place June 3.
Three suspects were arrested the following day.
Jeffrey Vargas Estemera, 24, was arrested on two counts of attempted murder. Vargas sustained gunshot wounds and was treated at a local facility. His bond is set at $500,000.
Stephen Santos, 34, was arrested following a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a minor accident. He is charged with one count of capital murder and one count of evading arrest. His total bond is set at $1,100,000.
Cornelio Mata Jr., 26, was arrested on Thursday in Pharr. He is charged with one count of capital murder. His bond is set at $1,000,000.
