Valley students giving back on MLK Day of Service

Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – UTRGV and YouthBuild students are making a difference at the Good Neighbor Settlement House in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The students helped make more than 300 goodie bags for the less fortunate. The bags contained snacks, water, hygiene products, and toilet paper.

MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday recognized as a national day of service.

Marisela Almeida, Good Neighbor Settlement House, “It’s awareness day, it’s make a difference. I think that by doing that we do, spread the awareness to our community, we all need to know and understand why these individuals are out there, they’re just like us.”

Gerardo Barron, UTRGV student, “I think it’s always important to give back to the community, you know there’s a lot of people out here that need our help and I mean if we’re not going to help ourselves who will.”

The goodie bags created will be distributed to the community on Jan. 23. MLK Day of Service is continuing throughout the day with students volunteering for a good cause.
