The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation donated the largest single amount of money in the history of higher education in South Texas, according to a release.
$38 million was donated to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
According to Guy Bailey, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley President, the money will go to research in the medical school and support a surgery residency. He added the money will transform the medical school and institution.
“It’s almost impossible for me to quantify, it will really transform what we do,” said Bailey. “It’s hard to express how important it is.”
Bailey said the gift will put UTRGV in the top 25 in the nation in philanthropic giving and the top 175 in total research expenditures, both rankings Bailey said are important to the campus.
“This is a monumental gift with extraordinary impact,” UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken said in a press release. “The partnership between Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and UTRGV is life-changing because it’s serving as a catalyst for scientific discovery that will directly and specifically benefit the people of South Texas.”
