EDINBURG, Texas – The UTRGV Track Team has been training hard for the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons. This year’s squad features big impact runners many who are returning after being red-shirted last season.
Coach Flowers, UTRGV Track Coach, “We’re really excited about those kids that are coming back as seniors but we also have a very talented incoming class I’d say the most talented freshman calls that we have brought in since I’ve been here.”
The Vaqueros Men’s Track team is coming off a Second place finish in the 2019 indoor season Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship.
“That was a really big surprise honestly we just had a lot of kids step up indoors last year I think we came in probably expecting to get 4th and just happened to get 2nd.” says Coach Flowers.
Coach Flowers says that Second place finish shows the talent and depth of the squad in runners like Fifth year Senior Yariel Matute who runs the 400/200/4×1 and 4×4.
“Just to put it together that one time it just felt great so it just gives it motivates us and it pushes us forward to actually be thinking oh were in contention to actually win a conference championship here.” says Matute.
The Vaqueros Women’s squad is also expecting to achieve great things this season. Fifth year senior Ida Tonye Cheetam-West, who runs the 100-200 and long jump, says veterans like herself are leaving behind a legacy.
“I think it’s going to be really good because how are fall training has been going everybody has been developing into you know the kind of runner you need to be for the team.”
After Christmas break the Vaqueros will get the indoor season kicked off at Texas A&M before hosting this years outdoor conference championship. Coach Flowers says this year’s squad is creating a championship culture and along with his coaching staff are on the verge of accomplishing success for the program.
“I really feel like we’re turning a corner here. Where the kids on this team are starting to believe that we can win championships. I think that’s maybe the biggest factor and the biggest thing that can really create a great team.”
The 2020 WAC Outdoor Track Conference Championship will be held in Edinburg from May 14 – 16 and the team would love to see support from the Rio Grande Valley.
