RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas — Food banks across the country are adjusting to the recent surge in demand of their service, and the UTRGV student food pantry is no exception.

In the past week, the food pantry has seen its largest spike in visitors.

School officials say this is because many students do not know about the food pantry.

According to a 2019 survey, 44 percent of UTRGV students are not aware of the food pantry.

Similarly, another study found that 44.2 percent of UTRGV students are food insecure, meaning they are “lacking the ability to have access to fresh, affordable, nutritious foods.”

The food pantry is available to every UTRGV student.

Food pantry orders can be filled out online.
