The federal funds come from the USDA for Rural Development. The award is made up of two grants. One for disadvantaged groups in rural communities and the other to support the Texas Rural Cooperative Center.

Both projects are meant to boost the local economy and expand local business.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, “The backbone of America is built on small business. This is just an opportunity to help our small businesses in our community grow and do better.”

Congressman Henry Cuellar, “It’s basically going into the rural areas and making sure they have job opportunities in there.”

The funds will help the university in their efforts to provide research and resources for rural counties in south Texas.
