The Greenpower USA Electric Car Challenge will come to Texas for the first time in Spring 2018.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Hispanic Engineering, Science, And Technology program teamed up with Greenpower to host the competition in Brownsville next year. Teachers from participating schools attended a training on Friday to get ready for the competition.
UTRGV STEM Director Office of Community Relations Javier Garcia says he hopes young students get inspired to explore careers in STEM through this challenge.
“This is sort of robotics on steroids–the kids end up building something and then they have their team and do modifications to their car,” Garcia said. “The idea is to be energy efficient.”
Thirty schools from across South Texas will build their very own race car in the competition.
Garcia says the race will not only bring the community together, but also gives students a positive experience.
