UPDATE: 8-year-old girl dies in car crash

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas – At about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Rio Grande City Police officers responded to a major crash on U.S. Highway 83 by CO-OP on the west side of city limits. When officers arrived, they saw a black Nissan SUV had collided into the back of a garbage truck.

The driver, 34-year-old Elia De La Cruz, was taken to Starr County Memorial Hospital. The passenger, 8-year old Leah Marie Gonzalez, was also taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Investigators say both individuals were not wearing their seat belts.

Leah Marie Gonzalez was a third grader at General Sanchez Elementary. The district issuing this statement on the child’s death.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family. Many children have and will be affected by this news. We encourage you to be especially sensitive and prepare to offer support to our students during this time.”

Investigators also believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash. Charges are pending.
