Unaccompanied Veteran James Sabatke Laid to Rest

Local News

This afternoon hundreds gathered in Mission paying their respects to an unaccompanied veteran. He’s the second veteran to pass away this week.

U.S. Army SPC James Sabatke was laid to rest with honor and dignity as hundreds of community members offered their respects.

Sabatke was born in March 1960 and served in the U.S. Army as an Attack Helicopter Repair specialist from 1977 to 1985.

As an unaccompanied veteran, James Sabatke had no family or friends to represent him in his passing. A spokesperson for the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery says he will hold onto the flag for 60 days in case Sabatke has family to claim it, otherwise the flag gets discharged and put back into cycle.
