UFC Coming to the State Farm Arena

Local News

For the first time ever, the Rio Grande Valley will be hosting an event for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Fights like these are crucial to attracting more sporting events of its type to the valley.

From Disney on Ice to concerts featuring artists like Pitbull or Selena Gomez, the State Farm Arena has had it’s fair share of entertainment, making it one of Pollstars Top 100 Concert Venues in the world.

The venue now wants to bring in more sporting events to the valley, and with the UFC coming to town this weekend, officials say this is the chance they’ve been waiting for to prove that this venue is as good as any other multi-purpose complex in the nation.

Mark Solis, State Farm Arena General Manager says, “It took two years to get them down here. They’re primarily an outlet that play in the major markets like Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. I think this is a really great opportunity for the Rio Grande Valley to show itself off. It’s a good opportunity for us to kind of let them know that we do support these type of events.”

The venue has not only received support from local residents for this weekend’s event, but even from the other side of the border.

Mark Solis, “We got people coming in from out of town. We’re seeing a lot of tickets being sold in other markets outside of the Rio Grande Valley. We have people coming in from Mexico.  It’s going to be a mix of people, but all fans of UFC.”

The main objective for officials is to sell out the event, but more importantly to impress the UFC so they can keep enjoying sporting events like this close to home.

Raziel Cano, Marketing Director, “Ultimately, that’s what the people in the valley want. They want to see world class events come to their backyard and we’re the only venue in the valley that can actually hold an event like this. I believe we’re going to deliver and UFC is going to be very satisfied, but ultimately it all falls on the lap of the people from the RGV.”

Tickets for this UFC event are still on sale. The fighters for this event will be training in local gyms before Saturday.
