It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week and a number of construction projects are going on throughout the Valley.

TxDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to remind drivers to slow down to keep workers safe.

The organizations say they want to protect everyone on the road as 82 percent of the fatalities in work zones between 2016 and 2017 were caused by drivers.

“In the Rio Grande Valley, we had slightly over 300 incidents in work zones and we had one fatality in 2017. So, it’s one of the things that we’re trying to stress again and again when you’re in a work zone,” said Octavio Saenz, Public Information with TxDOT.

TxDOT wants to remind drivers to stay off phones and be attentive to changes, signs and ultimately slow down as speed varies when in a construction work zone.
